Sea Salt Verses Table Salt
Sea Salt is salt evaporated from the sea, table salt may be evaporated from the sea or mined from an ancient dried sea bed. Table salt is processed to the same size crystal, completly uniform in the taste and apperance with other table salt. Sea Salt has texture, trace mineral content, and often color. Trace minerals are important because they react with sodium chloride and the function of the human body. Table Salt is white, trace minerals removed and anti caking agents added.
What Are The Differances Of Sea Salt Brands?
The choices become more important the deeper you dig. Sea salt contains sodium chloride, trace minerals found in the ocean. Different brands may be soft crystals, hard crystals, different texture, and color from the method or source of the sea salt evaporatiion. Many times Iodine is added, and anti caking agents to prevent clumping.(just like found in table salt) Not all sea salt's are the same, infact sea salt can have no difference from table salt. What makes the difference is the way they are evaporated, dried, and what is added to the product. The biggest difference is how you use the salt, is it to add crunch, beauty to a dish, dissolve easily for soup, rimming a Margarita glass, and for enhancing flavor. There are different kinds of salts that meet different culinary needs, and that is your choice.
How Do You Choose The Healthiest Sea Salt?
Like most things, there are clues to guide you. Is the Sea Salt, minned, evaporated by heating with fossil fuels, vacum evaporated with machines, reverse osmosis used to seperate the salt from the water? Is the sea salt processed, heated to high temperatures, washed, stripped of trace minerals, chemicals, and anti caking agents added? If the answer is yes, to any of the above questions, this is not a healthy sea salt, nor is it safe for the planet, or for your body. But is in essence, table salt disguised and labeled sea salt.
